In 1986 Burkhard Tümmler initiated the cystic fibrosis research group, which by 1993 became the 'Klinische Forschergruppe: Molekulare Pathologie der Mukoviszidose'. He has been working for many years in the fields of cystic fibrosis and genetic diversity of Pseudomonads. He is the coordinator of several national and international research projects including the European CF Twin and Sibling Study or the Pseudomonas putida genome sequencing project. As a medical doctor he still takes care of cystic fibrosis patients at the MHH's pediatric clinic.
